Extending A Work And Holiday Visa?
I am a US citizen with a passport, looking to apply for the Work and Holiday Visa for Australia. (Note: Work AND Holiday, not Working Holiday - they are very different.) And I know that the visa is good for twelve months. Is there a way to extend it so that I could continue to live in Australia and work, rather than not be allowed to work at all under another visa?

In order to be eligible for a 457, you must have qualifications and experience in an occupation on the list of occupations eligible for the visa and of course, you must have an employer who is eligible and willing to meet the conditions required to sponsor you.

A 457 can only ever lead to a permanent visa if your occupation is also on the ENSOL and after having worked on a 457 for at least 2 years, your 457 employer is then willing to sponsor you for a permanent subclass 856 Employer Nomination Scheme visa. If your occupation is not on the ENSOL and/or your employer won't sponsor you for an 856, you must leave Australia within 28 days of your 457 expiry.

There are no other work visa alternatives and from a 462, it will even be difficult to get a Tourist visa to extend your stay. Americans can apply for Student visas from within Australia, but again, not if your W&HV has a condition 8503.
