   I buy stuff from Japan.
   I am annoyed when parcelforce delivers my stuff, because I always get £16 "handling fee" in the customs payment! I don't want to be charged £16 for some guy to charge me VAT fees!
   So are registered airmail items delivered by royal mail? They seem to not charge customs fees as often, and dont have a stupid handling fee.

   From experience the fees are as a result of the sender not paying the appropriate charges (happened to me few times before with Royal mail) Registered items are sometimes sent by Royal Mail and sometime Parcel force: http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/conte…
   
   So basically if the sender declares everything (i.e. they say it is a gift worth xxx when it is something else worth even more) and pays the charges you won't need to pay for their errors/laziness. If that person was/is an ebayer, ask for him/her to refund the difference or leave him/her with a negative feedback as a result
